My spouse and I visited San Diego for five days in early
July 2018. We arrived on the July 4 holiday and based ourselves at the Hilton
in the Gaslamp District, which was a great location because there were lots of
restaurants, bars, and shops on bustling Fifth Avenue just steps from the
hotel. Our hotel also proved to be an excellent choice because we were able to
view the Big Boom Fireworks over the San Diego Bay from the comfort of our
suite! We did lots of touristy things, including visiting the USS Midway,
Coronado Island (and the Hotel Del Coronado), Old Town, Balboa Park, taking a
sailing cruise, riding on the hop on-hop off Old Town Trolley, and visiting the
affluent suburb of La Jolla. We ate some decent meals, although the food wasn’t
as good as we had envisioned. However, we did enjoy the world’s best Bloody
Mary, an incredible concoction served in a pitcher topped with veggies, meats,
cheeses, and a whole rotisserie chicken – something we will never forget!
