Whistler: Black's Pub (August 2014)

My spouse and I dined at Black’s Pub for lunch on a Wednesday afternoon in early August 2014. We did not have a reservation (although they accept reservations via telephone), but a server quickly seated us on their terrace at the table of our choice. The restaurant is open daily for breakfast, lunch, dinner, apres-ski, and drinks.

Black’s Pub is located in the Sundial Hotel. This restaurant offers both indoor and outdoor seating on two levels. A large flagstone terrace is located a few steps above street level, and a smaller deck is located on the second floor. Both seating areas overlook the Whistler Village Gondola at the end of the Village Stroll near the Hilton and the Westin. Many of the tables on the patio have umbrellas, and the patio features stand-up propane heaters, which are necessary at night, even in the summertime. Black’s shares its bathrooms with the Mexican Corner restaurant. Guests access the bathrooms on the upper floor through some winding hallways. Black’s Pub features live music two nights per week.

We shared a flatbread pizza topped with butternut squash, chorizo, and arugula, followed by a “banoffee” pie (bananas and toffee in a pre-baked tiny circular pie shell topped with whipped cream). Black’s offers better-than-average pub fare. The pizza used unique ingredients, and both it and the pie were tasty.

Service was pleasant, but slow. We expected to wait 15 minutes for our pizza to bake, but we waited even longer than that for our dessert to arrive. Although the tiny pie shells were pre-baked, the bananas were obviously cut-to-order (or else they would have turned brown), so clearly some preparation time is involved; however, our dessert took an inordinately long time to arrive.

Overall, we enjoyed our lunch at Black’s Pub. The food was good, and the location where we could sit outside and enjoy the view was ideal.
