New York City: Legacy Records (February 2020)

My spouse and I visited Legacy Records for brunch on a Sunday in mid-February 2020. Legacy Records is open daily for dinner and for brunch on the weekends. Guests can book a table using the online RESY reservation system.

Legacy Records opened in March 2018 on West 38th Street near 10th Avenue in the Midtown South/Hell’s Kitchen/Hudson Yards neighborhood near the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center. It occupies the street level of the Henry Hall Apartments. The Delicious Hospitality Group owns Legacy Records and also operates neighbors Parcelle, Ada’s Place, and Easy Victor Café (in the same building), as well as Charlie Bird in SoHo and Pasquale Jones in NoLita.

The L-shaped restaurant space offers a lounge/bar area upon entry as well as a coffee corner. The main dining room occupies the rear of the space, with stand-alone tables in various sizes and configurations, a few booths, and some more private tables that share two banquettes in two sort of recessed pockets in the dining room. Large windows open onto a narrow strip of outdoor space. High ceilings, cloth wallcoverings, leather tabletops, metallic finishes, and pops of green color complete the décor. The restaurant’s name comes from a recording studio that once stood on the same site, and accompanying music reminds diners of that fact.

We shared two appetizers: the beet salad (red and golden beets and something else incredibly tasty that we could not quite place, perhaps a Japanese yam?) and the duck sausage (two homemade patties nicely grilled and topped with a piece of crispy sage [this item is listed as a side dish on the menu]). We loved that the beet salad contained mostly beets, whereas so many other restaurants use mostly greens with just a few small slices of beets. As our main dishes, we ordered the tonarelli cacio y pepe (pasta with a pecorino and peppercorn sauce; this dish was a bit undersized) and the fried chicken (which is listed on the menu as a side dish, albeit a very hearty and entrée-priced side dish; alternatively, you can order the fried chicken as a sandwich). Disappointingly, the only dessert offered was three flavors of ice cream (we passed). The food was delicious and the service was excellent.

We enjoyed our brunch at Legacy Records; the food, service, and atmosphere made for a pleasant experience.
