New York City: Houndstooth Pub (February 2020)

My spouse and I visited the Houndstooth Pub on a Saturday afternoon in mid-February 2020. The Houndstooth Pub is open daily for lunch, dinner, drinks, in-between, and late night. We were a little confused about its weekend opening time, since the decorative sign hanging on the corner of the building seemed to indicate that it opened daily at 11:00 am, when in fact, on weekends, it does not open until 12:00 noon. We arrived as walk-ins; however, the establishment accepts bookings using the online RESY reservation system.

The Houndstooth Pub opened in October 2008 at the corner of 8th Avenue and West 37th Street in the Midtown South/Garment District. It is located on the street level of a block of buildings that contains other restaurants and shops. Houndstooth offers several places to dine. The main dining room is located on the street level and benefits from many windows that provide light for the marble-topped horseshoe-shaped bar, adjacent high-top larger tables, or at regular-height smaller tables positioned on a platform just a step up from the main floor. Two other dining rooms (one below ground) offer two additional bars as well as overflow seating. Tile floors, wrought-iron railings, modern chandelier lighting, high ceilings, and lots of wood complete the décor.

The Houndstooth Pub offers upscale British and American pub cuisine. We shared the “English jackets” as an appetizer (potato skins topped with slightly spicy chili, cheese, and sour cream) followed by the fish and chips (two rather small pieces of battered fish accompanied by fries and tartar sauce) and the burger (topped with a choice of cheese [gorgonzola], lettuce, tomato, and pickles and served with either fries or side salad [we chose fries]).

We enjoyed our lunch at the Houndstooth Pub.
