Pittsburgh: Siempre Algo (November 2019)

My spouse and I dined at Siempre Algo for dinner on a Wednesday night in late November 2019. We had tried to dine there a few weeks before on a Saturday night, but the restaurant was fully committed, so be sure to make a booking using the online Open Table reservation system to ensure choice of day and time. Siempre Algo is open for dinner and drinks on Tuesdays through Saturdays (closed on Sundays and Mondays).

Siempre Algo (whose name means “Always Something” in Spanish and refers to the idea that there’s always some new food to try or reason to celebrate or the idea that something is always happening) opened in 2018 in the North Side Deutschtown neighborhood of Pittsburgh on East Ohio Street. The restaurant is located on a block of other restaurants and shops in the space formerly occupied by Schrim’s Garden Cafe. The space features a tin ceiling, exposed brickwork, and a semi-open kitchen, all enhanced by dim lighting. A long bar dominates one side of the room, with a few high-top tables near the front windows. The other side of the space offers seating at tables, some of which share a wooden banquette on one side. The second floor offers overflow dining and event space.

Siempre Algo serves contemporary American cuisine. As we perused the menu, our server offered us a complimentary glass of prosecco, which was a lovely way to begin our dining experience. We shared the delicious pork tamal (pork shoulder, delicata squash, pepitas, mole) as our first course, followed by the beef cheek agnolotti as a second course (this yummy dish was a special of the night). For our entrees, we ordered the tasty red snapper (with barley, bok choy, and coconut curry broth) and the roasted chicken (breast and leg with spinach dumplings). We shared the pumpkin cake as dessert, which was the most ordinary dish of the night.

We loved the food at Siempre Algo, and the service was excellent. When we had a question about a particular dish, our server asked the chef to come out and speak to us personally. We will definitely return!
