Detroit: July 2017

My spouse and I visited Detroit over the 4-day Independence Day holiday in early July 2017. Initially, we had planned to take a driving trip somewhere within a few hours of our home, but after our Memorial Day weekend trip to Boston when we got stuck in traffic driving both to and from the city (adding at least an extra hour to each trip), we explored options for where we could fly non-stop (and using frequent flyer tickets) from our local airport. Our choices included Charlotte NC, Atlanta GA, and Detroit MI, and Detroit was the winner! Many people asked us why we would want to visit Detroit, but we have heard and read that it is experiencing a renaissance, so we wanted to check it out for ourselves. We flew there right after work on a Friday (the schedule couldn’t have been better, and the less-than-2-hour flight couldn’t have been easier), and we had three full days before we flew back home. We attended a Tiger baseball game, visited a huge indoor/outdoor market and several museums (including Motown, Institute of Art, Greenfield Village, and Henry Ford), and we had dinner with some old friends who moved there over 12 years ago. Being so close to Canada, we were also able to get our NEXUS approval (like Global Entry). We enjoyed our weekend, and would return in a heartbeat – there are still things that we want to see, like the auto baron mansions and a few more museums, and maybe even attend a Lions football game! What we will remember most about our visit was the friendliness of the people – from bellman to Uber drivers to restaurant staff to ballpark attendants to retail workers at the airport, we have never encountered such happy and engaging people anywhere! What a great weekend in the “Motor City”!
