New York City: Schnippers Quality Kitchen (May 2018)

Schnippers Quality Kitchen (May 2018) – Fast Casual American Comfort Food

My spouse and I purchased a takeout lunch from the Midtown West location of Schnippers Quality Kitchen on a Saturday afternoon in late May 2018. The restaurant is open daily from 11:00 am to 11:00 pm, with earlier opening hours of 10:30 am on weekdays.

Schnippers is owned by two brothers who first operated NYC’s Hale and Hearty Soups from 1995 to 2006. They opened the first Schnippers in 2009 with a menu of American comfort food that includes burgers, hotdogs, tacos, sandwiches, salads, and milkshakes. (The restaurant does not offer alcoholic beverages.) Schnippers has several Manhattan locations: Midtown West, Midtown East, Chelsea, Tribeca, and Flatiron. The chain also recently opened a new NYC venue in the Financial District called Thunder Bun.

We visited the Midtown West location of Schnippers, located in the New York Times Building on the corner of West 41st Street and 8th Avenue. The space occupies a corner location with high ceilings and bordered on two sides by windows (although the footprint of the space does not offer 90-degree angles), making the expansive space seem even more spacious. The restaurant has an open kitchen, in front of which you place your order at a gleaming counter. (Staff will activate your buzzer when your food is ready for you to pick up.) You can sit at one of the long communal rows of tables, or you can take away food, as we did (they have an online ordering system). Red, white, and silver/stainless accents complete the décor.

We ordered a Cobb salad (although the blue cheese overwhelmed the dish) and a turkey club sandwich (more successful). We are glad to have tried Schnippers; we have walked by the Midtown West location dozens of times over the years, piquing our curiosity.
