New York City (May 2017)



My spouse and I visited New York City for the weekend in early May 2017. It was somewhat of an unplanned trip back to the Lower East Side; when we last visited that area in mid-February and stayed at the Hotel Indigo, a run of really hot weather left hotel without functioning air-conditioning, and so the Indigo offered us a complimentary return stay. We gladly accepted, because we still had a lot to investigate in the neighborhood. We returned to the Tenement Museum for a 2-hour food-centered walking tour, and we took an indoor tour that taught us about two immigrant families who once resided there during the depression era. We had planned to take a second indoor tour, but instead, we learned that we were the lucky winners of a Broadway lottery for Noel Coward’s “Present Laughter”, which starred Kevin Kline and Cobie Smulders (Robin from How I Met Your Mother). Having seen another Noel Coward play, “Blithe Spirit”, last summer at the Pennsylvania Shakespeare Festival, we could appreciate the similarities and farcical style of Coward’s writing. We ate an enormous Japanese meal at Jewel Bako, with lunches at Dirt Candy (who knew vegetarian food could be so delicious!) and Pig and Khao (the second word in the name is a play on the word “Cow” which features prominently in the Filipino/Thai food that they serve). We had drinks at the Grey Lady (which we visited previously in February because of its proximity to the Tenement Museum), the Skinny (where we watched the Kentucky Derby because of its proximity to the Hotel Indigo), and Smith’s (which was close to the theatre, but is not related to The Smith). The weather was predicted to be rainy, but we were fortunate that it was mostly just overcast and gloomy. It was another great weekend in the city!
