I recently dined
at the Shanty on 19th with a group of coworkers to celebrate the
holiday season; however, I have dined at the Shanty with my spouse several
times previously since it (re-) opened in May of 2014. The Shanty accepts
reservations by telephone. They are open daily for lunch and dinner. Parking is
available on the street, or in the nearby parking lot (previously the parking
lot for Technicolor Salon & Spa and now for the School of Rock; actually,
this was the old Shanty parking lot years ago).
The Shanty was
closed for many years until it was purchased by new owners and completely
renovated. In fact, it has undergone a small renovation even in the year since
it was first opened; initially, the front of the restaurant space contained
true theatre seats in a lounge area (perhaps in a nod to the nearby 19th
Street/Civic Theatre), but they have since been replaced with high-top table
seating. A private room is available for events. In nice weather, you can sit
outdoors on the front brick patio at wrought-iron tables and chairs topped with
bright red umbrellas.
Over several
visits, we have tried the scallop risotto, crab cakes, pierogies, meat &
cheese board, and springroll appetizers, all of which were good. For entrees, we
have tried the New Yorker sandwich (corned beef, swiss, and cole slaw) served
with fries, and the burgers (also served with fries). The Shanty’s famous salad
bar is still available, although we have not tried it.
The Shanty is a
great dining choice if you are going to see a show or movie at the nearby
Civic/19th Street Theatre; it is very short walk from the restaurant
to your movie or show.
