My spouse and I enjoyed dinner at Lokanda Peskarija on a
Sunday evening in late August 2016. We found Peskarija after we strolled the
entire length of the Stradun from the Pile Gate. This restaurant is located
behind the Rector’s Palace near the City Walls on the pedestrian-only street
called St. Blaise (Ulica Gorica Svetog Vlaha). The restaurant enjoys views of the
old city harbor and the old Fortification of St. John. In fact, the restaurant
occupies the space of the old fish market (Peskarija), from which it takes its
name. The owners of Lokanda Peskarija also operate restaurant mezzanave (in the
Atlant Center in the new city) and the popular Pizzeria Mea Culpa (in the Old
Town).
Lokanda Peskarija offers both indoor and outdoor seating. The restaurant interior resembles an old
local tavern; its 30 seats are located on the second floor (above the bar and
the kitchen) and are used on rainy and cold days. Outdoors, the spacious
terrace seats 400 guests at umbrella-shaded tables. Staff are clad in
navy-and-white striped T-shirts, lending a nautical feel.
Peskarija serves
simple seafood and fish dishes, similar to meals eaten by local fishermen
families decades ago. For main dishes, we ordered the grilled shrimp
(kozicena zaru) and the mussels (musules), which were both served in big pots in hearty quantities (we were still
able to clean our plates, though). We shared the flan (rozata) for
dessert, and we also ordered a large bottle of water and three rounds of drinks
for a total of 469 Kuna ($68).
We ate a great unpretentious meal at Peskarija, consuming
piles of fresh seafood at this harborside restaurant.
