New York City: Gleason's Tavern (July 2019)

My spouse and I dined at Gleason’s Tavern for dinner on a Saturday evening in mid-July 2019. Gleason’s is open daily (and continuously) from 8:00 am to 2:00 am for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and drinks. Diners can book a spot using the online Open Table reservation system, although we arrived as walk-ins.

Gleason’s Tavern is located on West 41st Street (between 8th and 7th Avenues) on the street level of the Hotel Shocard. Gleason’s is located next door to the Nederlander Theatre (and across the street from the stage door of the New Amsterdam Theatre), steps from the Hampton Inn Manhattan/Times Square Central, and across the street from the rear entrance of the Hilton Times Square. (We visited Gleason’s for an early dinner after attending a show at the Nederlander.)

Although Gleason’s is located in the Times Square/Theatre District, we felt that the environment and the quality of the food and service exceeded the usual tourist restaurants in the area. Patrons can enter the restaurant either from the hotel lobby or directly from the street. A few tables are located near the front windows, with the majority of the seating located in the darker but pleasant rear space. A fifty-foot-long bar occupies one side of the main dining room, with regular-height tables positioned along the opposite wall (some of which share a black padded banquette on one side) and high-top tables occupying the center of the space. Black subway-tiled walls, a black-and-white tiled border around the bar base, Edison-bulb lighting, and black-and-white vintage NYC photos create a vintage look.

Gleason’s Tavern serves upscale pub fare. We shared the shrimp dumplings (with a soy-citrus dipping sauce) as a starter, followed by the shepherds pie and the beef sliders (served with French fries) as our main dishes. For dessert, we tried the berry tart, served warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

We enjoyed our dinner at Gleason’s Tavern; the food, atmosphere, and service created a pleasant experience.
