My spouse and I dined at
Jimmy’s 21 for dinner on a Friday evening in early July 2019. Jimmys 21 is open
for lunch and dinner, with a short closure in the afternoon between the two
meals. Diners can book a spot using the
online Open Table reservation system.
Since it opened in 1961, Jimmy’s
21 has been located on Main Street in the village of Lake Placid on the banks
of Mirror Lake near the High Peaks Resort. The bar/restaurant offers four
floors on which to dine, include several decks for outdoor dining. On the main
street level, patrons enter through the bar room, with a long L-shaped bar. A
few booths line the hallway that leads to the rear dining room, with table
seating and Italian-inspired murals on the walls. One covered deck (where we
dined) is located off the rear main dining room. Restrooms are below ground
(down a circular staircase), along with overflow dining rooms and a small deck
with a truly riverside view. We didn’t go upstairs to the top floor, but we
envision another dining room, and we could also see an opend rooftop deck from
where we sat.
Jimmy’s 21 serves Italian
cuisine. As we perused the menu and ordered drinks, our server delivered a
bread basket with butter and dipping oil. We shared “Jimmy’s Starter” as an
appetizer, which consisted of a few very large hunks of cheese, served with prosciutto,
raisins, red and green grapes, and roasted red peppers. As our main dishes, we
ordered the pasta primavera (linguini topped with olive-oil-sauteed broccoli,
red and green squash, mushrooms, and tomatoes) and the Bolognese (we
substituted linguini for penne and dusted it with Parmesan cheese). Pasta,
although homemade, was a bit overcooked (we prefer it more al dente), but
portions were hearty and filling.
We enjoyed dining outdoors at
Jimmy’s 21.
