My spouse and I visited the
Lake Placid Olympic Museum (LPOM) on a Sunday afternoon in early July 2019.
Museum admission was complimentary with our Olympic Passport (otherwise, it
costs $8 per adult). The museum is located within the Olympic (ice) Center,
where you can also visit the Hall of Fame, Jack Shea Arena (figure skating rink),
and Herb Brooks Arena (the hockey rink where the US men’s ice hockey team’s
Miracle on Ice happened in 1980). The speed-skating oval where Eric Hyden won
his five gold medals in 1980 is visible outside (although in the summertime without
the ice/snow, it looks like a running track oval). Restrooms, a souvenir shop,
and a cafeteria are onsite in the Olympic Center itself. The Olympic Museum is
small (it occupies just one room), but it is packed with interesting memorabilia
and displays, including a team parade uniform from every Olympic games since
1924, figure skating costumes, medals, mascots, sliding sports equipment
(bobsled, skeleton, luge), an area dedicated to the Miracle on Ice, and a few
Olympic torches. (We were particularly delighted to see the torch that was
created by Bethlehem Steel Company in Bethlehem, PA, our hometown.) One portion
of a wall in the space is dedicated to a temporary exhibit, which focused on
the history of Whiteface Mountain (including trailmaps) when we visited. We
enjoyed our one-hour visit to the Olympic Museum, especially since it was
included free with our Passport.
