Detroit: Comerica Park (July 2017)

Comerica Park - Nice Ballpark with Plenty of Extra-Curricular Activities Besides Baseball

My spouse and I visited Comerica Park for the Detroit Tigers vs. Cleveland Indians game on a Saturday afternoon in early July 2017. We purchased our tickets online through the MLB website, although we also saw seats available on third-party vendor Stubhub.

Comerica Park is located on Woodward Avenue in Downtown Detroit, across the street from Ford Field and steps from independent bars and restaurants including the Elwood Grill (see our separate review titled “Stop in Before/After a Lions or Tigers Game”.) and Cheli’s. The home venue for the Detroit Tigers offers some interesting things to see besides the game itself, including a Ferris wheel (in which the cars resemble giant baseballs) and a carousel (with 30 hand-painted tigers and two chariots). You can also see larger-than-life steel statues of famous Tigers players (including Willie Horton, Ty Cobb, Charlie Gehringer, Hank Greenberg, Hal Newhouser, and Al Kaline) as well as a Walk of Fame (that chronicles Tigers history from the 1800s to today). We also enjoyed seeing the Tiger-themed Statue of Liberty and Mickey Mouse statues. The ivy-covered center wall field features a “liquid fireworks” fountain that shoots water synchronized with music and lights in order to celebrate home runs and other notable occurrences. (What a clever way to provide celebration in a dense city area where real fireworks are prohibited!) A beer hall, food court, and twice-the-usual number of concession stands and cash registers are available to purchase food and drinks, and several souvenir stands offer merchandise (including one with high-end authentic memorabilia). Admission gates open 1.5 hours before the first pitch, and you must pass through a security screening before you enter the ballpark. Many different seating options are available, including larger movable chairs with small side tables that offer in-seat food and beverage service. Be sure to look for the many giant tiger sculptures guarding the main gate.

We enjoyed our day at Comerica Park, and the Tigers 7-4 win over the Indians put everyone in a celebratory mood for the first game of a double-header day!
