Madrid: Villa Real (August 2006)

We enjoyed our 4 night stay at the Villa Real from August 10 to 14. We arrived quite late at night after a harrowing day of travel, and were overjoyed to receive an upgrade to one of the two-story duplex suites. On the lower level was a foyer, marble staircase to the second floor, large half-bathroom (no shower or bathtub, but with toilet, bidet, and double sinks), and sitting area with antique desk, leather sofa and leather chair. There was a small standing-only balcony off the sitting room. Upstairs, there was a king size bed, another large bath, and a HUGE terrace with table, chairs, and umbrella (the only thing that would have made the terrace better was some sun lounger chairs--it was certainly large enough to include those too).

Public areas were quite nice. The internet in the lobby was useful, but very hard to gain access to the computer due to the number of people waiting. The bar was hip and modern. The breakfast (and the room it was held it) was excellent, and since it was included in our room rate, well worth the price. All kinds of cold foods (meats, cheeses, cereals, pastry, juices, cold pasta, fruits, yogurt, breads, fritatta). Several elevators (3, I believe), so there was never any waiting to access the upper floors.

Location was PERFECT! We could see both the Ritz and the Westin Palace from our room. It was an easy 15-minute walk to the Atocha RENFE station. We took a cab from the airport for about 25 Euros. We also took a cab to the La Sepulvedana bus station in order to day trip to Segovia (about 5 Euros each way)--too far to walk. Many restaurants with outdoor seating just a few blocks away (AWAY from the direction of the Ritz, Palace, and Atocha) toward the Puerta del Sol.

Wouldn't hesitate to stay here again. Had great responses from the hotel's direct e-mail, as well as great communication from the Small Luxury Hotels associates.

We went with the Villa Real, and were very pleased. We were upgraded to the 2-story duplex suite, which was fantastic. We could see both the Ritz and the Westin Palace from our upper terrace. I didn't realize that we would be THAT close! I even liked the location of the Villa Real better, since there were many more restaurants and shops toward the Puerta del Sol than toward the Atocha station. Certainly worth the money, and I would make the same choice again.

Guests at the Villa Real can definitely use the pool at the Urban, but it is tiny! Only about 6 sun lounger beds, and then another 4 sling-back type chairs, with an additional 4 beanbag-type chairs. There is more room on the upper decks, but just regular outdoor furniture there, not sunning chairs. Still, quite a nice perk. Only a block from the Villa Real, too. The Urban is really a hip, modern hotel.
