Pittsburgh: Yard Gastropub (November 2016)

My spouse and I visited the Yard Gastropub for brunch on a Saturday morning in mid-November 2016. We made a reservation online using the Open Table reservation system. The restaurant is open daily for lunch/brunch, dinner, and drinks.

The Yard Gastropub is located in Downtown Pittsburgh’s Market Square, in the second-floor space previously occupied by restaurant Anna’s La Cucina Flegera, and by Froggy’s prior to that. Yard Gastropub has another location on Bellefonte Street in Shadyside, in addition to a small venue (with a subset of the menu) in the PPG Paints Arena (previously called the Consol Energy Center). The owners of the Yard properties also own Coach's Bottleshop & Grille on Banksville Road.

The second-floor space includes two dining areas: the front area contains a bar and high-top tables, and the rear area offers regular-height tables. The restaurant seats approximately 100 patrons. Windows at the front of the restaurant space offer a glimpse of Market Square and provide light. The rear wall contains a colorful chalkboard that advertises upcoming events. We did not notice an elevator, so call ahead if you have limited mobility.

In addition to a full bar, including 35+ beers on tap, The Yard offers upscale pub food including many variations of grilled cheese. We ordered two cleverly named entrees: the Big Che-Bowski (a sandwich featuring bacon, cheese, and an over-easy egg) and the Blarney Stoner (an open-faced sandwich piled with beef, cheese, and mashed potatoes). The restaurant served each sandwich atop a metal cookie sheet, along with a side order of tater tots and a cup of tomato soup. The restaurant also offers sliders, poutine, fries, and brunch options on weekends. The Yard features a make-your-own Bloody Mary bar (including shrimp for garnish) and bottomless mimosas at brunch time.

The extensive menu at the Yard Gastropub offers something for everyone.
