Miami (July 2016)

We took a quick 3-day long weekend trip to Miami for the Independence Day holiday. The trip started out a bit rocky, with a 3-hour delay of our departure flight due to electrical storms on the East Coast. Fortunately, United Terminal C at the Newark Airport has been recently revamped, with over 55 new shops and restaurants, so we spent some time at Riviera (Alex Guarnaschelli), CBGB Lab, and Proof Whiskey Bar. We arrived in Miami after 3:00 am, and after a quick cab ride to our hotel, the Shore Club, we actually went out in search of some breakfast at Maxine's Bistro. Then we slept for a few hours, awoke to pouring rain which quickly ended, and took a taxi to Little Havana. There, we sampled lots of food and drinks, like empanadas, croquettas, mojitos, frozen coconut, freshly-squeezed beet juice, guayaba con queso (guava and cheese pastry), Cubano sandwich, Abuela Maria ice cream, and banana daquiries. Later that day, we spent some time on the beach (next to Kourtney Kardashian and all the paparazzi), followed by happy hour, and then a theatrical dinner at Barton G. On Sunday, we visited Vizcaya museum, followed by lunch on South Beach at Larios, some beach time, a freezing-cold happy hour, a disastrous attempt at dinner at Gianni's at the old Versace Mansion, and then an excellent successful meal at Jose Andres' Bazaar at the SLS. On Monday, we slept in a bit to recover from the flight down, and flew home at a reasonable hour. We used Uber extensively on this trip - we are converts!
