My spouse and I enjoyed drinks at the Ball and Chain on a
Saturday afternoon in early July 2016. The Ball and Chain is located in the
Little Havana neighborhood of Miami, on SW 8th Street (or “Calle
Ocho”, which means “Eighth Street” in Spanish) between SW 15th and
16th Avenues.
It is open daily from 12:00 noon (or 2:00 pm on Sundays) until the early
morning (3:00 am).
The front doors
of the Ball and Chain can be opened to the street to reveal the entire
restaurant, giving guests the feel of being outside. Water-misting fans provide
relief to those passing by on the sidewalk. The overall feel of the
bar/restaurant is of a Cuban nightclub from long ago. The unique ceiling fans are
operate on a chain and pulley system that is visible against the high wood-beam
rafters. The wooden chairs and leather booths are accented against the green
walls. The décor has an old world feel, much like one would find in Cuba where things
have been repaired, reused, and recycled since the embargo. The back patio is a
pleasant oasis, with a separate bar, stage, and comfortable lounge seating with
loads of stuffed pillows. Even the restrooms keep with the ball and chain
theme, featuring chain accents on the doors and mirrors. Historic event posters
line the walls. Opened
in 1935, the Ball and Chain boasts notable past performers such as Billie
Holiday, Count Basie, and Chet Baker. Daily live music continues today, even at
noon on a Saturday.
We shared a few
rounds of drinks (including frozen banana daiquiris) while we listened to the
music and enjoyed the last stop on our self-created food and cultural tour of
Little Havana. The Ball and Chain is a must-see on any walking tour.
