Alexandria: Majestic Tavern Cafe (May 2015)

My spouse and I dined at the Majestic Café/Tavern for lunch on a Saturday afternoon in late May 2015. The Majestic Café/Tavern is located on King Street in Old Town Alexandria. The restaurant offers mostly indoor dining, with a few small tables placed out front on the sidewalk (but out of the direct traffic pattern). The Majestic is open for lunch and dinner daily. The restaurant features a long bar at its entrance, with additional seating at booths and tables fronting the open kitchen area. Restrooms are on the basement level. First established in the 1930s, The Majestic has been renovated to preserve its roots, from its original neon signs to its tiled floor. The current iteration of the Majestic opened in 2001. The building’s Art Deco facade is original to The Majestic. Two outside neon signs that were the building’s signature were rebuilt, including one running 25 feet to the rooftop. A third sign, carried over from the original Majestic in 1932, remains in perfect working order and hangs inside the front window. The terrazzo floor is original, and the tin ceiling on the sides of the dining room reproduces the design of the original Majestic. The booths and banquets are similar to the original Majestic Cafe. The bar incorporates Art Deco light fixtures from the original restaurant. The menu at the Majestic Tavern features creative comfort food, and we had trouble deciding what to order from all the amazing-sounding selections. We shared arancini (risotto balls with short rib served with a creamy mustard sauce) as an appetizer, followed by fish tacos and steak tacos as our entrees. The coconut cake dessert (from nearby purveyor Bittersweet Bakery Cafe) was phenomenal, and the huge portion was astounding! We really liked our lunch at Majestic, and would return!
