Rio de Janeiro: Churrascaria Palace Restaurant and Bar (February 2012)

My spouse and I ate dinner at the Churrascaria Palace Restaurant and Bar on Rua Rodolfo Dantas, only one block from the Copacabana Palace. This rodizio restaurant serves skewer after skewer of every kind of meat imaginable! A selection of cold salads and accompaniments is laid out on a buffet, and other hot items are delivered to the center of your table such as French fries, onion rings, and bread. Be sure to try one of these churrascaria restaurants, and be sure to be very hungry when you go! The restaurant was extremely crowded on a Saturday evening when we arrived at approximately 9:00 pm, and we were given the only open table at that time, which was near the front door. (In the US, normally we would refuse such an undesirable table, but it ended up being fine and was a memorable meal despite where we were seated.) A typical “carioca” house, the Palace is the most traditional barbecue restaurant in town, founded in 1951 in the always exciting Copacabana. It was born together with Bossa Nova and the carioca way of life. It is internationally well-known for its “all-you-can-eat” format that includes first-class meat, seafood and fish. Among the meet, the highlights are the butterfly “picanha” cut – a cut created by the Palace in the 1980s, the Douro style lamb shoulder, and the prime rib.
