We spent a great 2-night weekend in Pittsburgh in late September-early October 2017. We drove out after work on a Friday evening, and all was going well, until we approached the city and found out that our route (376 West/Parkway) was closed 30 minutes before we approached. With some quick thinking, we exited at Wilkinsburg, which led us through Shadyside (including past a huge synagogue when it was ending its Yom Kippur services) and the University of Pittsburgh campus in a detour around the city. We stayed at the Kimpton Monaco, a swanky (new-to-us) hotel, and it was fun to see how much personality a boutique hotel can have. Our room was awesome (the great rates allowed us to choose a fancier room than we normally would), and we enjoyed the complimentary wine and beer happy hour in the hotel’s “Living Room”. We also tried their two restaurants, The Commoner and the Biergarten. We also tried some new restaurants around town, including Tequila Cowboy, Bar Marco (which allowed us a pleasant walk through the Strip District on a busy Sunday morning), and further afield in Lawrenceville, Cure. We also visited Fort Pitt (formerly Fort Duquesne in the hand of the French) for some history and culture. Fortunately we didn’t encounter any traffic issues on the drive home. Another great weekend in Pittsburgh!
