Bayeux: Au Louis d’Or (August 2017)

Au Louis d’Or – Try Both the Savory and Sweet Offerings
My spouse and I dined with our private tour guide at Au Louis d’Or Creperie for lunch on a Monday afternoon in late August 2017. The café is open daily from 12:00 noon until 9:00 pm. Our guide telephoned ahead to reserve a table.
Au Louis d’Or, whose name contains the word for “Golden”, reflects its name in its interior wall color, trimmed with white edging. The restaurant enjoys a cozy corner location near the famous Bayeux Cathedral. Several tables are arranged adjacent to windows that open, offering patrons a pleasant view of peaceful city while they dine. If the weather is favorable, you can dine outdoors on the sidewalk at small tables topped with umbrellas.
The menu at Au Louis d’Or is centered on French specialty pancakes. The restaurant offers both “gallettes” (savory main dishes made from buckwheat flour) and crepes (sweet desserts made from “farine de froment [wheat flour]), and we sampled a few of each. For the savory gallettes, the outer edges are semi-folded inward, similar to an open-faced crostata; one of our dishes was topped with crisp salad greens, thin slices of smoked canard (duck), and a sunny-side-up egg. Our two dessert crepes, folded evenly in quarters, were stuffed, with walnut cream and Nutella. We also tasted our first local Calvados (apple) cider at Au Louis d’Or, which we drank from traditional “boilles” (bowls) instead of glasses/cups.
We enjoyed our lunch at Au Louis d’Or. Although prior to arriving in France, we had not been fans of crepes (previously knowing only the sweet variety), we were converted by the delicious food, pleasant service, and comfortable surroundings at this restaurant.
