Santiago: Bar Danes (March 2017)

Santiago: Bar Danes - One of Three Full-Service Landside Dining Options
My spouse and I dined at Bar Danes at the Santiago de Chile Airport twice on a Saturday in late March 2017. On our first visit, we ate lunch, and then due to lack of better choices (and also because of our successful first meal), we returned that same day for dinner (although dinner was less successful than lunch). Note that the staff speaks no English, nor is an English menu available. Although we are not Spanish-speakers, we were able to communicate adequately. (In general, we found a lack of English-speaking staff in the landside restaurants, whereas the staff at the airside establishments spoke a little English.)
Bar Danes is located on the third level of the airport (which holds the airline check-in counters and security checkpoints for departing passengers). The bar/restaurant is positioned across from the domestic security gate, near Dunkin’ Donuts, a pharmacy, a Britt shop, and an independent sundry shop. Danes offers both booth and table seating, some of which extends a bit into the atrium area for a more spacious feel. You can also sit farther inside the restaurant or at the bar. “Danes” means “Danish” in Spanish. Other locations (besides the airport) include Colon, Vitacura, and Alto Las Condes.
Bar Danes serves Danish and continental cuisine including sandwiches, burgers, salads, and entrees. For lunch, we ordered two sanguches de la casa (house sandwiches), which arrived with ingredients piled high on large round rolls. For dinner, we requested the empanadas as a starter, but our waiter gestured that they were only sold at lunchtime. Then we tried to order pastel de choclo (a sort of beef-and-corn shepherd’s pie) and a fried chicken dinner, but again he indicated that these entrees were only available at lunch (at least we thought that’s what he meant!) Instead, we ordered the chili cheese fries as a starter (not recommended) and two different sandwiches/burgers, but they were not as impressive the second time around. Although the food was not inexpensive, the prices were on par with other dining choices at the airport. Each of our meals cost about $55 USD for one shared appetizer, two burgers/sandwiches, and three rounds of drinks (three beers and three sodas). When it was time to pay our bill, the server motioned that he would add a 10% gratuity if acceptable, and when we indicated that it was, he ran our credit card through a portable machine that he brought to the table.
If we had known that some menu items were only available for mid-day, we would have reversed the order of our meal selections. As such, our first meal was more satisfactory than our second.
