My spouse and I dined at Don Juan Mex Grill and Cantina for
dinner in June 2019 and drinks in January 2019. This location is open for lunch
and dinner on Mondays through Saturdays (closed Sundays).
The Macungie location of the Don Juan opened in January
2019; the first restaurant in this local chain opened in 2011, with other
locations in Fogelsville, Easton, Bethlehem, and Emmaus. The Macungie
(Brookside Road) property is the only one with table service and a liquor
license; the other venues offer counter service and nonalcoholic beverages
only.
The restaurant occupies a two-story historic farmhouse in
Lower Macungie Township. Downstairs, guests can sit at the bar or at one of the
adjacent booths, or upstairs in the vaulted-ceiling spacious room. (No elevator
is onsite.) Seasonal outdoor dining is also available at umbrella-topped tables
on a patio ringed with flower planters made of wood and corrugated metal. Décor
includes colorful Mexican tiles, a giant photo mural near the stairs, and
bright red metal chairs.
Don Juan serves Mexican cuisine, as its name implies. As we
perused the menu, our server delivered tortilla chips and salsa to snack on. As
a starter, we ordered the pineapple guacamole, which was pitifully unseasoned.
For our main dishes, we ordered a selection of tacos (carnitas, fried cod,
chicken, in various wrappers like soft flour, hard corn, and Bravo style [hard
and soft shells together]) and the enchiladas rojas con queso Chihuahua (served
with Spanish rice, black beans, and fresh pico de gallo). On our first visit,
we tried the empanadas and some margaritas.
We enjoyed our al fresco dinner at Don Juan Mex Grill and
Cantina.
