New York: Long Island (May 2018)

My spouse and I visited Long Island and the Hamptons on a weekend in early May 2018. We have talked about visiting the Hamptons for years, but the prospect of dealing with gridlocked summer traffic was a real deterrent. We even investigated visiting on a long winter weekend, but the hotels all required a multi-night minimum. But we decided this was finally the year, choosing to in late spring before the Memorial Day crowds descended. We also decided to stay on Long Island rather than the true Hamptons (on the “bottom jaw” of the “alligator”, so to speak). Staying on Long Island also provided us an opportunity to check out a few of the Gold Coast attractions. We did drive out to the tip of the island one morning, walking around the Montauk Lighthouse and having a drink in the nearby bar/restaurant, but then we returned to Long Island in the afternoon. We ate lunch in Oyster Bay before touring Sagamore, the Roosevelt “Summer White House”. We also visited Oheka Castle, the second largest private home in America (after the Biltmore in Asheville, North Carolina). In addition, it was both the Kentucky Derby and Cinco de Mayo that weekend, providing entertainment after we returned to the hotel. It was a great weekend, and we would like to return to Long Island to tour some additional mansions
