Lighthouse Point: Sicilian Oven (December 2016)

I dined with two family members at the Sicilian Oven for dinner on a Thursday evening in late December 2016. The restaurant is open daily for lunch and dinner. The restaurant accepts reservations via telephone, but walk-ins are welcome. Other Sicilian Oven locations include Boca Raton, Aventura, Plantation, and Coral Springs.

The Sicilian Oven opened in 2008 in the Shoppes at Beacon Light strip mall shopping center on Federal Highway in Lighthouse Point (along with Publix, Menchies, Lito’s Surf and Turf, Education Station Preschool, and the UPS Store). Sicilian Oven resides in the space previously occupied by DiSalvo’s Pizza, which shares some of the same ownership as the Sicilian Oven. The space offers two dining areas connected by the stone-front semi-open kitchen. Tasteful décor includes stacks of firewood (for their wood-burning pizza oven), a granite-topped bar and counter, wooden tables and chairs (a few of which share a padded banquette on one side), and 1920s-style movie posters. The restaurant offers a full liquor license with beer, wine, and cocktails.

The Sicilian Oven serves Italian cuisine, including wood-fired pizza. We ordered the Tuscan bread to start, which is brushed with olive oil and sprinkled with herbs. With our bread, we shared the house salad (romaine, roasted peppers, walnuts, olives, tomatoes, red onion, garbanzo beans, and gorgonzola cheese in a sweet balsamic vinaigrette). Then we sampled three pasta/protein entrees (pollo mateau [breaded chicken cutlets topped with prosciutto, onions, and cheese in a mushroom sauce], pasta Bolognese, and pasta with vodka sauce). We shared the zeppanollis for dessert (deep-fried dough pockets [zeppoli] surrounding a dollop of cannoli cream, and drizzled with chocolate or caramel). The food is tasty, and portions are plentiful – you will not go away hungry! Our server was fantastic; upbeat and excited about her job (despite being a longtime employee) and able to answer our many questions about menu items in great detail.

We enjoyed our dinner at the Sicilian Oven and plan to return.
