New York City: Barleycorn Craft Bar and Grille (August 2016)

My spouse and I visited Barleycorn Craft Bar and Grille for drinks and snacks on a Saturday afternoon in mid-August 2016. We had just finished a tour at the nearby Woolworth Building, and we were in search of a bar nearby for refreshments on a hot and humid summer afternoon. The restaurant is open daily for lunch, dinner, and drinks. You can make a reservation via telephone or online using their own website, although walk-ins are accepted. Reservations are required for The Cricketers Arms Room (a bar within a bar). The Barleycorn owners also operate Rattle n Hum and Beer Authority in Midtown.

“Barleycorn” means a unit of length equal to one third of an inch, although we are not sure of the reason for the bar’s name. The bar/restaurant, which opened in 2014, is located in the Tribeca/Financial District on Park Place near Church Street, just a few blocks from the World Trade Center site. With over 10,000 square feet of space on two levels, Barleycorn stretches an entire block, so you can enter from either Park Place or Murray Street. Over 20 TVs and 5 projection screens allow you to keep current with sporting events.
The star of Barleycorn Craft Bar & Grill is its 67-foot-long marble and distressed wood bar which offers 75+ draft and 100+ bottled beers, as well as cocktails and wine. Its large beams, stone walls, and leather nail-head chairs create a rustic-lodge feeling. The vast space is geared toward hosting large gatherings, particularly on the second floor.
The restaurant describes itself as an American gastropub. We shared two appetizer items: the nachos and the mac and cheese wedges, along with a few rounds of drinks. Barleycorn also offers “Old Brooklyn-Style” thin-crust pizza that rises to perfection in the restaurant’s brick oven. Reportedly, the recipe originated in Sicily and made its way to Brooklyn in 1933. About 50 years later, it was handed down to the Barleycorn chef.
Barleycorn is a good choice for casual dining and drinking in the Financial District.
