My spouse and I dined at Fat Pie Pizza on a Thursday evening in late
July 2014. We stayed nearby at the Fairhaven Village Inn, which was less
than a 3-minute walk from Fat Pie. The restaurant is located in
Historic Fairhaven, right off the Village Green, at the corner of
Eleventh Street and Harris Avenue. Although Fat Pie does not have a
dedicated parking lot, street parking is available throughout Fairhaven.
Fat Pie is open daily for lunch and dinner.
We did not have a
reservation, but the restaurant honored our request for outdoor dining.
The hostess seated us on the second-story deck. The restaurant offers
additional outdoor seating on the third-level roof and on the street
level, as well as indoor seating on both floors. We saw only stair
access, but we think that an elevator is present if you need it. The
second-floor deck offers a glimpse of the Village Green. On the night
that we dined, even though it was after 7:00 pm, the sun shone directly
on us, almost blindingly so, and the umbrellas and canopy did not
provide relief.
As an appetizer, we shared the calamari
accompanied by a garlic aioli dipping sauce. (You can also opt for a
more traditional marinara sauce.) The calamari was fried and then rolled
liberally in Romano cheese, which masked the taste of the seafood. We
shared a Chicago-style deep-dish pizza (which looked like a cheesecake)
called “Union Station”. It featured a flaky cornmeal crust filled with
meats (sausage, bacon, meatballs) covered in Bolognese sauce and
mozzarella cheese. We ordered a small pizza, which was too large for two
people to finish. (The restaurant menu states that the small size feeds
two to three people.) We took the remainder of our pizza home as
leftovers. Fortunately, when the pizza was cold, it did not require a
knife and fork to eat, as it did when it was hot, because although the
restaurant was able to box the remains for us, they did not provide any
disposable plastic ware. Big Pie also offers Detroit-style pizza, which
features a square Sicilian crust. The restaurant offers only three basic
desserts; however, they offer 15% off any bakery item at next-door
neighbor Rocket Donuts.
We would return to Big Pie because the Chicago-style pizza was delicious!
